Support our sponsors!

by flanders — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment

Don’t foget to support our sponsors.  Without them, our club would have trouble finding adequate meeting locations.

This month’s sponsor is the Texas T-Bone Steakhouse, where we had our October meeting.  They have north, south, and west locations.  Their express lunch is a good value, and quick.  They also have an early-bird special for dinner that seems like another good value.  Check out their website for more info: http://www.texastbonesteakhouse.com.

Who the hell are ya, Flanders?

by flanders — Categories: Uncategorized1 Comment

As your new president, I think you all should know a little about me.  If you haven’t met me yet, consider this my introduction. First of all, I would like to send a huge thank you to Shoe and Johnny for fostering our club into what it is today.  We have a vibrant crew filled with lots of competent brewers.  Our club keeps getting better and better, and I look forward to taking us further.

Amanda and I both hail from the small town of Lexington, VA, nestled in the heart of the Shenandoah mountains.  We both went to University of Virginia in Charlottesville, where I got a master’s in electrical engineering. I moved to Colorado Springs in 2006 to take a job with Agilent Technologies, and Amanda followed soon after.

As for my brewing background, my brother kicked me into the hobby with a typical bucket-based starter kit, and into kegging a few years later.  Because I have been an apartment dweller until a few years ago, I spent way too long doing partial mash batches.  It took a six-month old kid in my life (Danny is now 2 years old) and nearly ten years of brewing to finally get me off my butt and build a true all-grain setup.  Since then, I’ve become obsessed.  Currently, I brew on a single-tier BCS-460 stand that I designed and had built custom, pulling ideas from the Brew Magic, Morebeer’s brew sculptures, and the Electric Brewery.

Favorite Breweries : Jolly Pumpkin, Firestone Walker, Russian River, Bells, 3 Floyds
Favorite Beers : Bam Biere, Monk’s Cafe, Two Hearted Pale Ale
Favorite Podcast : Sunday Session by The Brewing Network
Favorite Style to Brew : Anything and Everything
Hobbies outside of homebrewing : parenting, ultimate frisbee, hiking, & road cycling

I look forward to taking our club to new heights.  If you have any ideas to help us become a better club, please let me know.

Fruit Beer Fest and Homebrew Competition

by erics — Categories: UncategorizedLeave a comment
There is a Fruit Beer Festival in Portland, Oregon that attempts to challenge people’s worldviews of fruit beer. This year they’re also hosting a homebrew competition! Here’s the details:
Burnside Brewing, OBC’s host for the recent March out meeting, will be hosting the 2nd Annual Portland Fruit Beer Festival on Saturday, June 9th and Sunday, June 10th featuring many one-off, special brews from commercial brewers. The Oregon Brew Crew is pleased to again be running the PFBF homebrew competition this year.
This is an non-BJCP style open competition; any homebrewer, club or not, from any state, may enter. (more…)

Review of the Olde BroAle

by erics — Categories: Uncategorized1 Comment

Eric and Isaac from the local beer blog, Focus on the Beer, did a review of the club’s Olde Broale, which was commercially brewed up at Rockyard Brewing. They gave it a really great review. Check it out!
