2016 Iron Brewer pairings

The Iron Brewer challenge is based on the TV show “Iron Chef”. The board has selected the “Secret” ingredients and pairs of homebrewers will compete to see who can brew the best beer using…. *drumroll*…. Maple and *anything* that starts with the letter ‘B’! This means bourbon, bacon, brown sugar, butter(?), or anything you can think of to make your beer the best.

We’ll judge the entries at the November meeting so that should leave a fair amount of time to get brewing on this.

Here’s the list for our 2016 Iron Brewer competition, to date:

Iron Brewer Pairs

Mike Madsen Todd Horak
Josh ‘Fester’ Howard Ryan Hannigan
John ‘Safe’ Haven Mike ‘Axe’ Bordick
Chuck Page Dan Powell
Chris Daniel Johns
Stephen ‘Ator’ Shelton Michael
Ray Smith Eric Mitchell
Mark Welte Some guy from Pueblo?
Gary ‘G2″ Gagnon Dave Carpenter

9 teams, so a pretty good sampling.

Thanks to everyone who made the 2016 Peterson AFB Homebrew Fest a success this year!

All the volunteers who put in many hours sorting beers, collecting beers, collecting donations, and organizing the judging, festival, and events deserve a big round of applause!  Big thanks to Curtis and the staff at the Peterson AFB Club for hosting this great event year after year as well!

The winners of the Homebrew competition can be found on Brewscene HERE. Click on Awards to see the results.  *Editors note:  There was consolidation of categories to the NHC standards, and this resulted in most of the homebrew results being pushed down the list from where you might expect them, just keep scrolling

Why? Because we will have a fantastic buffet dinner, samples of many of the 480 entries from the competition, a room full of knowledgeable home brewers pouring their brew for you; many commercial micro brewers also pouring samples, a live band — the Big Horn Band – free souvenir glass/mug to the first 500 attendees, the announcement of the competition medal winners and so much more; and all for just $14 (non-members).

You MUST BE 21 years old or older to attend! If you have access to the base, just drive to The Club; the fest starts at 6:00 PM. If you do not have access to the base, stop at the Visitor’s Center and The Club van plans to stop at the visitor’s center bus stop every 15 minutes (traffic permitting) starting at 4:30 PM and run to about 6:45 PM (they will return you to the same location as the fest winds down).  CU There!!

Bru Bus 2012 Recap

The 2012 Bru Bus was a hit, as usual.

Here are the major highlights:

  • Congratulations to Cryptid (aka Justin) for winning the Odell competition with his Belgian Quad.  Flanders came in second, and Landybrew came in third.
  • Our raffle raised over $700 for the Brunetti scholarship fund!  That is awesome!  Be sure to give some business to our sponsors.  They made it possible.
  • If you lost anything on the bus (especially a pair of Rx glasses), contact Michele (huricanem5@msn.com)

First of all, a quick thank you to our sponsors.

  • Pikes Peak Brewing Co.
  • Trinity Brewing Co.
  • 56 Ring
  • Rockbottom
  • Coaltrains
  • Old West
  • And, of course, Bryan and Lori

There were no hiccups with the Ramblin Express bus this year.  Our driver was Mandy and she was a great spirit who was more than willing to put up with our shenanigans.

Although the beers on the bus were a little late getting tapped (somewhere around Castle Rock?), there were six great options, including a cranberry saison, “Beer for Boobies,” donated by Pikes Peak Brewery.

We arrived at New Belgium nearly 30 minutes early.  We got to hang out at NB’s brand new (as of October) pilot brewery, a 10 hectoliter system with all of the bells and whistles.  They poured fantastic beers including a Biere de Garde, a peach beer, La Folie all from bottles as well as a Brett saison from tap.  They also gave away a bunch of bulk spices (ground ginger, pink peppercorns, ground lemon peel, ground orange peel and more) and aged hops on a pallet in the back.  Funkwerks also showed up with a bunch of their beers as well.  New Belgium gave everybody a really nice snifter glass, and they also donated some sweet schwag for the raffle.

Next we headed off to Coopersmith.  They served up food soon after we got there.  Lots of great stuff.  Most people headed over to Equinox for the remainder of their spare time.  Equinox gave us a quick tour of their 10 hectoliter Premier Stainless system.  They have been cramming more and more fermenters into their tight space.  They also had a sweet bike for delivering kegs.  Pateros Creek not to be missed either.  Visitors were treated with a short and simple tour.

We did the raffle during lunch at Coopersmith.  There were lots of great offerings, mostly gift certificates from various restaurants and breweries.

Lastly, we made it to Odells.  Matt greeted us and treated us to awesome beer choices from many pitchers.  We did a quick tour, most of which is a bit hazy for most.

The trip home was mostly uneventful.  Bullies’ wedgies were mostly avoided.

Brew Brothers 3rd Annual Nick Brunetti Memorial BRU-BUS!!!!!

Members!!!  Its time for the:

Brew Brothers 3rd Annual Nick Brunetti Memorial BRU-BUS!!!!!

All day Saturday, Nov. 17th

Why do you spell “Bru-Bus” wrong?

Glad you asked!  A little history lesson:

Once upon a time, there were homebrew clubs in Colorado Springs; one very old club that was called Deep Wort  for a time, then the name changed to Homebrewers of Pikes Peak (or HOPP)and a much newer club called Brew Brothers Brewing.  Duane Lujan was president of Deep Wort for a LONG time, and then a new guy moved to town and joined the club.  His name was Nick Brunetti and at his first meeting Duane stepped down as president and nominated Nick to take his place.  One of the first things that Nick instituted was a tradition from his Cleveland homebrew club: The Beer Bus.  So Michele and Nick worked together on this project for the first 2 years, and Brunetti, the second year, suggested inviting members of Brew Brothers Brewing along.  I think it was the first social event the 2 clubs shared.  Later there was talk of combining the 2 clubs, with Nick and John Garbett hammering out the differences.

Just before the membership vote, we tragically lost Nick at age 32 to a sudden death.  He was a big advocate of the merger, and soon after his death the two clubs became one:  The Brew Brothers of Pikes Peak (or BBoPP).

Every year since his passing, the club has dedicated the bus trip to Nick BRUnetti.  We know that you all didn’t get to know him, but trust us that did: you really missed something amazing.  He was a force of nature!  Thus the spelling: BRU-bus.

(Money raised in the Super-Raffle benefits his IT scholarship fund set up by his parents.)

TICKET SALES

PRICE:  $50.00 each, due at the time of ticket purchase. Checks and cash. Specify burrito selection and the email address and phone number of yourself and your family member(s) accompanying you, at the time of purchase.

SALES TIME & LOCATION: October Club Meeting,  Texas T-Bone on Centennial, beginning at 5:30 PM, until 50 tickets are sold out.

WHO: Active individual club members will get first choice.  Members with family memberships can sign up spouses and close relatives.  (This does not include your next-door neighbors or your brother-in-law from Kansas.)  If tickets remain, non-member friends are allowed to sign up, etc. The club is growing and we don’t want to crowd members off the bus.

What do I get for the $? A beautiful Ramblin’ Express coach with bathroom.  You get a breakfast burrito on the bus; you will specify which type: bacon, chorizo or veggie; mild or hot. You get a $14.00 lunch buffet at Coopersmith that will include tax & tip (comes to about $17.50 per person).  There will be plenty for meat lovers and meat haters!!!

You get beer on the bus up and back, thanks to the generosity of members who contribute kegs.  You get tours and/or specials at all of the breweries. I will post the buffett menu at the meeting and on MeetUp.
